International Exchange in South Korea: How Ana Lucía Arroyo’s University Opened the Door to a Global Experience

Although Ana Lucía initially hesitated because she was concerned the trip might interfere with her athletic season and academic responsibilities, she ultimately decided to apply. After successfully completing every stage of the selection process, she was chosen to represent her university in this international exchange program.

An International Exchange Focused on History and Culture

The program was designed as a two-week cultural immersion experience.

During their stay, the group visited some of South Korea's most important historical and cultural landmarks, including traditional temples, the National Museum of Korea, local markets, and several sites that showcase the country's rich history.

Rather than being a typical tourist trip, the goal was to better understand how South Korea's history, culture, and economic development have shaped the country it is today.

Although the itinerary was demanding and involved long walks between destinations, every visit provided valuable insights that are difficult to gain from a classroom alone.

Visiting the Demilitarized Zone Offered a Powerful Perspective

One of the most memorable moments of the international exchange was the visit to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the border separating South Korea and North Korea.

From an observation point, the group was able to see North Korean territory and even spot people on the other side using binoculars.

They also walked through one of the infiltration tunnels built by North Korea during the conflict between the two countries. For security reasons, visitors were not allowed to bring cell phones or cameras inside, as photographs could reveal sensitive information about nearby military installations.

Beyond the physical experience, what impacted Ana Lucía the most was witnessing the tension that still exists between both nations. Despite the presence of tourists, the atmosphere served as a reminder that history continues to shape everyday life in the region.

The War Memorial of Korea Became One of the Most Meaningful Visits

Another site that left a lasting impression was the War Memorial of Korea.

During the visit, the group learned about the stories of hundreds of students who volunteered to defend South Korea during the Korean War when there were not enough soldiers available to fight.

Many of these young volunteers were close in age to today's university students.

Hearing their stories encouraged the group to reflect on the privilege of growing up in a peaceful country like Costa Rica, where several generations have lived without experiencing armed conflict.

More than a history lesson, the experience offered a deeper understanding of how different realities shape people's views of freedom, security, and patriotism.

Experiencing South Korea Through Everyday Life

The experience extended far beyond historical sites.

Traditional markets and Korean cuisine became an essential part of the trip. Ana Lucía took every opportunity to try new dishes and discover flavors and ingredients that were completely different from what she was used to.

She also fondly remembers walking through Seoul's narrow streets.

Filled with cafés, restaurants, shops, and photo booths, these quiet and welcoming neighborhoods became some of her favorite places to explore. They allowed her to experience a side of South Korea that goes beyond what people typically see in social media or television dramas.

This connection with everyday life made the experience even more authentic.
