OFFICE HOURS

What are “office hours” in the United States college system?

Office hours are times when you can meet with your class professors to discuss the material being presented in class or other related interests you have. Professors usually announce their office hours on the first day of class or in printed material or on the course website.

Why is it so important for student athletes to attend office hours?

It is already truly important for any college student to attend and try to take advantage of college professors’ “office hours”. But for a student athlete, who spends almost 40 hours a week practicing his or her sport and for that reason often misses classes or important course events, it is essential to attend office hours.

Ideally, go with a list of questions, concerns or doubts, and you will not only get better grades, but you will actually learn more. There is no need to feel intimidated or be afraid of “looking stupid”; that’s what office hours are for!

As an international student athlete who spent four years within the system, I really wish someone had told me this at the beginning of my college career.  It’s amazing how much better students who come to office hours when they are confused throughout the semester. It is often not only the difference between passing or passing the course, but also the difference between a “C” and an “A,” and the difference between hating a subject and loving it so much that the student decides to major in it.
